Journalist gives clues over Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent – and some fans won’t be happy

Canelo Alvarez, arguably the number one pound-for-pound fighter on the planet right now, might NOT fight a boxer on his return to the ring.

Canelo was last seen in action against Caleb Plant where he became the undisputed light middleweight champion of the world. His next step has been subject to constant speculation ever since the conclusion of that fight.

The Mexican has never shied away from fighting reigning champions in their prime years, which unfortunately is unusual in the boxing world. The trend of fighting the best of the best in the sport could be set to come to an abrupt end this year, however.

According to ESPN journalist Salvador Rodriguez, Canelo’s next opponent might not be so well-received by the hardcore, traditional boxing fans, who have become increasingly frustrated with some of the unorthodox fights that have been staged over the past 18 months.

The two possible opponents that he could be referring to are YouTuber Jake Paul and UFC Champion Kamaru Usman. Both have been linked with the possibility of stepping into the ring with Canelo.

All due respect to the pair, they would stand absolutely no chance if they were to fight Canelo in his prime. Canelo ought to wait until his boxing ability has tailed off a little before paying a visit to the circus…
