Portuguese side Benfica is being investigated for match-fixing after hacked emails were revealed.
According to the Portuguese press, the period in question is between 2016 and 2020 and involves all of the club’s board members.
This isn’t the first case of foul play levelled against the Primeira Liga side, just a year ago acting president, Luis Filipe Vieira was forced to resign after-tax evasion and money laundering charges.
The allegations claim that Benfica unfairly forged results in their favour during that period.
Benfica released a brief statement on the matter.
“Taking into account the news made public today, Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol SAD confirms that it appeared in court on January 3, as well as, among others, the members of the Board of Directors from 2016 to 2020 and who are currently in office,” the statement read.
“Benfica SAD will not comment further as the trial is under legal secrecy. Benfica expresses its total willingness to collaborate with the competent authorities, as has always happened up to now.”
The club’s current president is footballing legend, Rui Costa who is also under investigation for his involvement.
