Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta set to sign pre-contract agreement with European giants

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta is reportedly nearing an agreement with Barcelona ahead of a free transfer move in the summer.

Azpilicueta has been a key figure for Chelsea for a number of years. The £7m fee that the Blues paid Marseille to sign the Spaniard back in 2012 will go down as one of the finest acquisitions in Premier League history.

However, all good things must come to an end eventually, and with Azpi having been displaced in the side by the younger and more offensively-capable Reece James, the time may well have come for him to depart Stamford Bridge.

According to Gerard Romero, a journalist who usually has the inside track when it comes to matters relating to Barcelona, Azpilicueta is set to sign for the Catalan giants when the month turns to January.

With the defender being out of contract with Chelsea in the summer of 2022, he is free to pen a pre-contract agreement with any foreign club on January 1st. If Gerard Romero is correct, he intends on using that privilege.

Azpi would leave Chelsea having established himself as one of the finest defenders in their history – a true legend. Barcelona would be landing themselves a very capable, experienced defender on a free. It makes sense for all parties.
