Watford FC have announced that Premier League legend Dennis Bergkamp’s son, Mitchel, has signed a six-month contract with them with an option to extend the deal should he have a successful period at the club.
Mitchel Bergkamp has signed a six-month deal with Watford, with an option of staying on following an unsuccessful trial with Arsenal’s under 23s.
Twenty-two year old Bergkamp plays as an attacking midfielder and was unfortunately let go from Steve Bould’s Under 23s side last November following a one week trial.
Young Bergkamp has some big boots to fill and will be keen to prove his worth after his father Dennis had such a successful career.
Watford have completed a six-month deal with an option to extend the contract if Mitchel impresses enough during his spell with the Hornets U23s.
Speaking to Watford’s official club website, Bergkamp said he can handle the expectation that comes with being Dennis Bergkamp’s son: ‘When I was younger it was difficult [to be compared all the time] but I’ve adapted to it now,’
‘It’s just my name and I’m my own player and hopefully I can leave my own legacy. He’s been amazing to me and for me. He’s my No 1 fan and has always been there for me. It’s a privilege to have him as my dad and to work with him on my game.’
