Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties to win the World Cup for the third time in their history.
France came from behind twice to take Argentina to a penalty shootout, and thanks to another stellar performance from Emiliano Martinez, were able to emerge victorious.
It was Lionel Messi’s last World Cup game for Argentina, and to a certain extent, it always felt as though this result was written in the stars. The greatest-ever player won the greatest honour in the game in his last appearance in the competition. It is fitting that such an iconic player should have such a poetic end to his World Cup journey.

Lionel Scaloni’s side were excellent in the first half and it appeared as though they were heading towards a rather comfortable victory. Heroics from Kylian Mbappe threatened that narrative, not once, but twice – however, in the end, the South American side overcame those challenges and are deserving champions of the greatest tournament in the sport.
