The European Super League could be back with fresh plans for a new competition featuring 80 teams in a ‘multi-division’ format.
The European Super League emerged two years ago when prominent clubs from Europe’s top divisions banded together to try and break away from their national leagues.
The announcement caused outrage from not just supporters of the clubs forcing a move away but from all football fans in general.

There were protests outside stadiums and calls for changes to ownership. The backlash was so extreme that it forced the majority of the clubs to withdraw from the idea.
But the European Super League was never truly abolished and plans still remain for its inception.

A company called A22, which is assisting in the creation of the league, have discussed the idea with over 50 clubs since October 2022 and would guarantee them at least 14 matches per season.
“The foundations of European football are in danger of collapsing.” Bernd Reichart, A22 chief executive, told the newspaper Die Welt.
“It’s time for a change. It is the clubs that bear the entrepreneurial risk in football. But when important decisions are at stake, they are too often forced to sit idly by on the sidelines as the sporting and financial foundations crumble around them.
“Our talks have also made it clear that clubs often find it impossible to speak out publicly against a system that uses the threat of sanctions to thwart opposition.
“Our dialogue was open, honest, constructive and resulted in clear ideas about what changes are needed and how they could be implemented. There is a lot to do and we will continue our dialogue.”
The new league would have no permanent members and would be decided by the team’s performances.
