In their first ever World Cup finals the Irish had progressed into the knockout stages from Group F at Italia 90 without winning a game.

Courtesy of three draws with England, Egypt, and Holland, and the lottery of drawn lots Ireland lined up to play Romania in the last 16 of the World Cup.

The date was the 25th of June 1990 and the venue was Stadio Luigi Farraris and the rest as they say, is history.
